The conversion of biowaste, such as human sewage sludge and livestock manure, into fertilizer is an established industry. One of the key areas of focus for the BIOWASTE CENTER is to address the potential of Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) to address the largely untapped resource of food waste. HTC can convert food waste into fertilizer, but the economic highest and best use of the technology may reside in production of Hydrochar for tumbling into sand for construction. The key advantage for climate change is that the sand is sequestered in the concrete for buildings and bridges or sequestered in roads.
